"Public discourse and engagement actually makes all of us stronger and better for it." I completely agree. Being critical, challenging people and organizations to rethink and debate is so important. This is one of the key lessons of blogging and why we should still foster the idea that long form content is king. I wish more people blogged for this reason. It helps you grow by getting you comfortable with expressing your opinion openly (and encouraging discussion) and developing a consistent voice on issues and ideas that you think are important.
