On Professionalism

August 15, 2008  |

Professionalism isn’t just about physical appearance or demeanor. It’s a method of interacting with people. Exhibiting professionalism is about respecting people’s time, intelligence and their right to unbiased information via the manner in which you engage them. It requires communicating in a way that minimizes exaggeration and eliminates emotionally charged language or personal opinions about others when sharing information.

Becoming a professional is easy. Being professional all the time is not so easy.

i have noticed that people in the stock market and business world show the least amount of professionalism.
  • Interesting that you'd say that, and I think it's a good observation worth
exploring...why do you think that is? Is it because of stress? Studies have
shown that people who live under constant time and performance pressures
exhibit higher levels of anxiety and unhappiness. Do you think that a lack
of happiness/well-being contributes to a lack of professionalism? Or is it
because of ego? If you're under consistent pressure to perform at a high
level in a very competitive environment, you'd have more incentive to
exaggerate your performance, and under-exaggerate your competitor's
    performance. Or maybe it's both...
